CLICK HERE TO READ ABOUT THE PHYSICAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT!!

In order to meet the needs of each individual student, the physical education curriculum offers the necessary information and skills to promote a lifetime of physical, mental, and social well-being. This program recognizes and provides for a variety of abilities and interests. We must learn to appreciate and respect the differences of others, control our emotions, and find outlets for self-expression. The physical education program helps the individual to accomplish these expectations through the most effective methods of learning by doing. Upon graduating from the Watertown Public Schools, students will have the necessary skills to achieve and maintain an active health enhancing and social lifestyle.

An important component of the physical education program is the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to determine whether students in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10 are physically fit. The fitness standards used to determine a minimum fitness level have been established by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The information gathered will be part of a Strategic School Profile report submitted by the school principal to the State Department of Education. The Strategic School Profile will provide physical fitness information by school, district and state. The four test items are: modified sit and reach, partial curl-ups, right-angle push-ups, and one mile run/walk.

Other components include:

Soccer

Touch Football

Team Handball

Cooperative Activities and Games

Basketball

Floor Hockey

Speedball

Volleyball

Track and Field

“Physical education is the only subject which, by the very nature of its content, has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his/her life.”
