Hello, my name is Mrs. Stepka. I am the Remedial Reading Teacher. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from St. Joseph College. I completed my Master’s Degree and obtained Remedial Reading Certification from Central Connecticut State University. I work with reading students in a small group setting. Lessons focus on strategies to improve their oral reading, comprehension, and language skills. I also go into the classrooms during language arts to team teach with the classroom teacher. I truly enjoy teaching in Watertown!
Help your kids select "just right" books that they can read independently without getting frustrated. Here are some suggestions to make reading a priority for the whole family. Make it easy. Keep good books, magazines, and newspapers around the house for all of you. You'll give everyone plenty of opportunities to read. Let's hear it. Read interesting things aloud: news stories, funny jokes, a delicious recipe, or words to a song. You'll boost your kids excitement for the written word. Do it. Let your children see you read for pleasure every day. You'll set a good example for them to follow. Comprehension To boost comprehension, ask your child questions before, during, and after the reading. Who? What? When? Where? Why? are questions readers should ask themselves as they read. Making predictions and connections also allows your child to use their own experiences to help them understand the story. Remember, reading is fun. Make it a positive experience for your child by getting excited about it, doing it together, and choosing literature of interest.
