Welcome to third grade!
Hello and welcome to third grade. I'm Mrs. Gruettner. I love teaching my students and having my students in turn teach me! I hold respect as my number one rule, and my classroom is run based on this character trait. I love to dance and read interesting books! Every day it is exciting to go into work and experience such fun with the students.
This quarter your student is learning many new things. Here is a quick overview of what we are working on in class for the first marking period.
Math: Students will be working on number sense, the order of numbers, and their place value. Students will be able to create story problems for addition and subtraction number sentences and be able to find clue words in order to solve word problems.
Reading: Students will learn strategies good readers use to build reading comprehension. They will learn techniques to answer questions about what they have read using examples and details to support their response. In addition, students will be working on specific skills such as visualizing and summarizing. Students will also be exposed to non-fiction text and will learn how to break text down to build comprehension.
Writing: Students will work on narrative writing and its characteristics. Students will identify complete sentences with subjects and predicates. They will use these complete sentences to form paragraphs.
Language Arts/Spelling: Students will work on creating structured sentences with correct punctuation. Students will focus on each type of sentence and its usage. They will look for sound patterns to help them spell their words properly. They will be applying their spelling words to their everyday work.
Science: Students will learn about habitats. Students will understand that habitats provide animals and plants with shelter and nourishment.
Social Studies: Students will learn about communities. They will be able to identify types of towns, suburbs, and cities.
Homework assignments for the week of September 29, 2008. *Homework is posted weekly. Please note that some changes may be made to assignments during the week. All assignments should also be copied down into agenda books. Agenda books are signed by myself daily to ensure that all students understand their homework responsibilities. If your student is having difficulties doing their homework and you aren't sure what the task requires, jot down a little note, and we will go over the assignment together in school.
