/filestorage/45/71/96/Place_Poster.doc http://www.itss.brockport.edu/~llac0731/605.html Ms. Amaral Welcome! I am Ms. Amaral, a 4th grade teacher at Judson School. It is going to be an educational and fun-filled year. My hope for this year is to provide your child with an education that will allow them to develop physically, socially, and mentally. I plan to do this by allowing students to work both in groups and individually to explore problems and become active learners. Throughout the year we will be working on many interest-based projects in which students take charge of their own learning. It is my hope that through these projects, students will embrace learning. To be successful this year my students will need to be prepared for class. Each day I would like my students to come to class with an open mind. They must come ready to listen, to discuss, to laugh, to share their ideas, and to embrace the ideas of others. I have found that these requirements help build a room full of confident and happy learners. I am very excited about this new year. I am looking forward to getting to know all of my students. I know that they are each special and unique. I hope that they will find my room to be a place where they can shine. Come back to our class site to check daily homework and to find out what we are learning in class. Homework

May Learning Science- We will begin learning about force and motion in science. We will experiment with different simple machines to see how they make work easier. Stay tuned for specific activities. Social Studies- We are currently working in groups to learn about the southeast region. We are organizing all information on graphic organizers. Students will then be working with partners to creat display boards on this region. We will be focusing on agriculture, climate, physical features, natural resources, industry, and tourism. Make sure you quiz your children on the states and capitals of this region. Math- We will begin geometry in May. We will be exploring geometry concepts through many hands on activities starting with nets and moving on to tangrams. We will be incorporating art and art history into this unit as well. I especially enjoy this unit because there are so many wonderful picture books that tie into this unit of study. In the weeks to come we will be reading Spaghetti and Meatballs. We will then work in groups to solve the characters problem which ties into area and perimeter. Who knew geometry could be so much fun! Language- We are working on expository essays in class. The students have learned already about the characteristics of an expository essay. Right now they are working on developing main idea paragraphs with supporting details. We will begin writing essays next week with Mrs. Payne. Reading- We will begin a reading unit for Shiloh. We will read this book as a class and students will focus on assigned reading strategies for each chapter. We will also working on vocabulary development while reading and language skills. Right away we will tie the book into a verb unit. We will be on the look out for interesting verbs for a verb wall and we will investigate how helping verbs "help."
Birthday and Holiday Celebrations Please note that we have severe food allergies in our class. When preparing treats to be passed out in class please follow the guidelines provided by Mrs. Andrews. Under no circumstances will any class treats be allowed in our classroom unless they are approved by the school nurse. All treats must have a complete ingredient list to even be considered for approval. Thank you for your help in keeping all of our students safe.
