"Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body."

- Joseph Addison

Welcome to 5th grade. I am so happy your child was chosen to be in my class! We will be doing many exciting and challenging activities throughout the year. Each day at school is filled with differerent situations. Remember to encourage your child to make appropriate choices while in school. It is going to be a great year! I am very exciting to be working with all my students throughout the school year.

I am available to your child throughout the school day. If your child has a question or concern please encourage them to talk to me. If you as a parent have a question please e-mail me through the link at the bottom of this page or you can contact the school, leave a message and I will return your call at my earliest convenience. I look forward to working with all the parents in my 5th grade class throughout the 2007-2008 school year.

What's going on in 5th Grade???????

LANGUAGE ARTS

Our language arts program will incorporate reading, spelling, writing and grammar in a block schedule (1 hour and 30 minutes). Our 5th grade reading program will focus on Literature Circles, author studies, and studying selections from Collections for Young Scholars. Mrs. Stepka will be visiting us once a week to work in small groups.

Writer's Workshop will be emphasized in fifth grade. Students will practice writing expository, persuasive, compare and contrast and narrative essays. Elaboration, grammar, sentence construction, word choice, and paragraphing skills will be taught in the context of writing. Mrs. Payne will be in twice a month to help us perfect our writing skills.

Math

This year in math we will be studying a variety of topics including:

  • multiplication and division
  • decimals and fractions
  • measurement
  • geometry
  • probability
  • graphing

The fifth grade curriculum emphasizes problem solving. Students will learn how to explain in writing the means by which they solve problems. Students will also learn that there is often more than one way to solve a problem.
